Back in the 1960′s, company founder Karsten Ping produced the first Ping irons by milling cavities into the back of forged heads. Now Ping is taking a bold step by releasing its first forged iron in decades.
GolfToImpress.com has posted some pictures of the irons, which are set for an April release in the Japan market. Forged from 8620 Carbon Steel, the cavity of the sole is hollow and backed with Tungsten which redistributes weight low and adds forgiveness. If you’re a fan of the “S” series but love a forged feel then these might be the irons for you. No word yet on a U.S. release but they will be available soon for purchase on tourspecgolf.com. If you do one thing well, stick to it. I’m not sure how Ping will be regarded as a maker of “forged” clubs. I guess they won’t be color coded..since you can bend ‘em.

Actually, it looks like from the pics that they have a black dot on the hosel. Plus they have the tell-tale notch, which Ping uses to bend the irons to spec.

@Steve Keeler, They will be regarded as a “forged” club maker because they are making “forged” clubs. Ping is good enough to do 2 things well, well 3 if you count driver’s, 4 if you count fairway woods 5 if you count hybrids, I guess they are just good. And you are bitter towards them for some reason.

@Fred, You forgot golf balls and carry bags..so that’s 6 and 7. I was choking on my bitter (hand, mouth? didn’t see it in my post I read it twice!) while smacking the G15 deep. Ping has been making great clubs for 50 years, I didn’t know how they would be received by the “forged” players market already established by Mizuno, Titleist, TM, Nike and others..because they (Ping) make great game improvement clubs and have a solid niche, but after speaking to the Ping reps it seems that it’s mainly going to be for the Japanese market. The US will get a small allotment of Forged Anser Blades (available on Ebay for sure at big $$$$). Aw Snap! there goes my “bitterness” again.

The founders name was Karsten Solheim, not Karsten Ping. Ping got its name from the sound the irons made.
