We’ve noticed a fair amount of golf courses in our area use gas powered golf carts and the ones that have gone electric are likely consuming a lot of electricity to charge their fleet. Why not go green and convert to solar? A new company is offering solar power systems for golf carts and we think that is a great idea.
This past May, Sebonack Golf Club in Southhampton, NY decided to enhance its environmentally conscious practices by fitting 39 of its 40 carts with solar panels. By doing so, it became the first U.S. golf course to implement solar technology for golf carts.
An energy study by the Golf Resource Group, a Phoenix-based firm, concluded that most golf courses use from 250,000 to 5 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually for operations. To put the higher number in layman’s terms, that’s the energy equivalent used in 278 – 2,500-square-foot houses.
So, if you are a golf course superintendent looking for a way to be more energy conscious and in turn cut costs, then checkout Solar Powered Golf Carts here or call 1-800-557-9507.

Since solar power will be far more inefficient, and will drive up the cost to buy the carts, I suspect most clubs will shun this approach.
If they make economic sense, then fine, this would be a good approach, but to just do it in response to environmental hysteria is hardly necessary.

@ Phana24JG – You are 100% right…just to do it for the thought of being green does not make any sense. The good news is this: The golf courses will save money (they also get a 30% tax credit from the federal government when buying solar) the golf courses will have to replace their batteries less and guess what, we dont run out of juice when we just paid 80.00 to play a round on our day off. So, I guess everyone wins…the ROI for a golf course is about 2 years but if there are any state or local tax breaks it could be sooner…and, when you buy batteries at the same time as the solar top, you can get the 30% tax credit as well.

Solar technology will probably be the future but as far as looking at this from an environmental approach there really is one superior solution. Walk the course!

Golf, the problem is that many courses, especially on the weekend, do not allow you to walk. Carts are mandatory!

Yes, and that is a disturbing trend. I try to walk as much as possible. Its great exercise and I find that I play better when I have more time to survey the course and think about my next shot.
