I have very simple criteria when it comes to golf apparel.  First and foremost, it has to wear comfortably with a proper fit.  That means I shouldn’t have to tuck my shirt back in or tug at my sleeves after a full swing.  The material should wick moisture away on hot days and resist wrinkling so I don’t look like a mess after a round.  And it shouldn’t shrink and fit like doll clothes after a couple of trips through the wash.

The ClassicCool Golf Shirt by Basic Golf fits the bill by providing a tapered athletic fit with stretchable mesh under the arms that allow for a greater range of movement.  According to the manufacturer, the CoolDry material is sweat free, dries quickly, and is air permeable. It is 100% synthetic so shrinkage should not be an issue.

Pros
basic-golf-2This is a very comfortable shirt. The material is extremely light weight and it stretches as you move. I wore this shirt under an outer layer this past week and I barely knew it was there. I couldn’t assess it’s wicking properties because temperatures during the round never rose above 60 degrees, but I think golfers in warmer climates should definitely give these shirts a try. I played Phoenix area courses for 19 years in the summer heat and and I would bet having a couple of these in the closet would have made those rounds much more comfortable.

The cut is modern and the color of the shirt I wore, which Basic Golf calls “Wasabi Green”, is very stylish without being over the top. The company doesn’t sell tall sizes, but I’m 6′4 and the ClassicCool in XXL was long enough. The quality is very good at a reasonable price point for a performance garment.

Cons
Fit wise, my only complaint was that the sleeves were a little tight. But I have a large frame and log a fair amount of time in the gym so that might not be an issue for most golfers. I wish that Basic Golf had more color and style options. And I’d also love to see what this company could do in other areas like pants or outerwear.

Final Word
In these economic times, if you’re looking for a less expensive quality alternative for your golf wear then I strongly recommend giving this company a try. The ClassicCool golf shirt retails for $44.95 and can be purchased at Basic Golf’s Online Store and at select retailers.
